Tharid

The most honoured dish in Islamic tradition. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The superiority of Aisha over other women is like the superiority of Tharid over all other foods." — Sahih al-Bukhari 3411.

Method

Step 1 — Prepare the bread: Cut the bread into bite-sized pieces and arrange them on a serving plate. Step 2 — Cook the meat: Heat oil or ghee in a skillet or pot over medium heat. Add the meat and brown it on all sides. Sprinkle salt and black pepper to taste. Add a splash of water, cover, and simmer for 20–40 minutes (depending on the type of meat) until tender, stirring occasionally. Step 3 — Assemble the Tharid: Spoon the cooked meat over the bread pieces, letting the juices soak in slightly. Step 4 — Serve: Enjoy warm as a simple, hearty meal.
