Gourd with Cured Meat and Barley Bread
A nourishing Prophetic combination of gourd and preserved meat. The Prophet (ﷺ) greatly loved gourd — Anas ibn Malik narrated: "I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) going after the gourd around the dish, so since that day I have always loved gourd." — Sahih al-Bukhari

Ingredients
- 2 cups chopped gourd (bottle gourd, pumpkin, etc.)
- 3–4 cups water
- 200–300g cured meat, sliced or in small pieces
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Method
Step 1 — Cook the gourd: Place the chopped gourd in a pot with water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15–20 minutes until soft. Step 2 — Add the cured meat: Add the cured meat slices to the pot. Simmer for another 5–10 minutes to heat through and allow the flavours to blend. Step 3 — Season: Add salt and black pepper to taste. Step 4 — Serve: Pour the gourd & soup into bowls and enjoy with barley bread.
